This project, also known as the "Monroe County Fleet Center" consisted of the demolition and reworking of an existing (former) wastewater treatment facility. A new 52,000 sf metal building was constructed on top of the existing concrete wastewater separator tanks. The facility contained 16 truck maintenance bays; heavy duty truck vehicle service lifts; an oil, grease, and waste fluids pumping and distribution system; a truck wash facility; as well as administrated offices, conference rooms, and support rooms. There were also six existing concrete separator tanks totaling about 42,000 sf which were turned into secure storage areas that the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department uses to house their evidence collected. A vehicle elevator was also installed so that if a car or other large item was taken in as evidence, it could be lowered down into the evidence storage areas for storage.
Because the facility was a former treatment facility, the existing site was a low site and contained bad and wet soils. This created the need for new metal pilings to be driven into the ground in order to support the new foundations, which would not sit on the existing concrete structure. The project involved extensive site work, such as building earthen berms to screen the facility from Paul Road, and having to build heavy duty retaining walls which allowed asphalt road to be installed so that the county vehicles and trucks needing service could drive into the truck bays.
There were also three existing round concrete water holding tanks that were backfilled, in order for the G.R.I.A (Greater Rochester International Airport) Storage Building to be built on them. This facility is a 31,000 sf metal building utilized by the airport to keep their lawn maintenance equipment, tractors, snow plows, etc. The interesting part of building this structure was that the three existing concrete tanks had to be backfilled to make a level surface for the building. The backfilling was done with recycled crushed glass provided by Monroe County from their recycling facility.
