May 5, 2026 Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks New Beginning for The Gateway Apartments – Rochester, NY

Rochester, NY – Today May 5, 2026, marked the ceremonial start of the Gateway Apartments project here in downtown Rochester, NY. Christa Construction gathered with local officials, project partners, and community members to celebrate the groundbreaking and this significant milestone.

As the general contractor, our team will lead the full rehabilitation of the structure, including the build out of 129 residential units, ground-floor commercial space, and the complete modernization of all core systems. This work will include new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing infrastructure. As well as structural reinforcement, the reworking of existing escalator shaft, and the full replacement of the aging exterior envelope.

The new façade will be energy‑efficient and architecturally significant, drawing inspiration from the building’s original white brick character. Our goal is to honor the building’s past while ensuring it performs to today’s standards of sustainability, durability, and resident comfort.

Historical Values:

The Gateway Building started its life in 1905 when A. Friedrich & Sons built the 5-story Cornwall building located at 156 Main Street. E.W. Edwards & Son later purchased this building along with the adjacent 7-story Central Building at 158 Main Street. It was then that a two-story addition was added to the Cornwall building, and the two structures were combined to create a cohesive skyline. When the glass facade was installed in the 1970’s, it brought with it a modern look but erased the craftsmanship and texture that was so significant to the character.

As part of this redevelopment, Christa Construction will carefully remove the deteriorated glass wall and rebuild an exterior that pays respect to the building’s historical significance and design. This work will require precision, coordination, and a deep respect for the building’s decades long history. Our team is committed to the historic preservation of the building and our community and hope this redevelopment will restore the depth and character of our downtown streetscape while meeting the demands of 21st century building.

Construction Approach and Community Impact:

Working within a tight urban footprint, our team will manage all site logistics, safety planning, and coordination with city partners to ensure the project progresses efficiently and responsibly.

The Gateway Apartments will bring new residents, new commercial activity, and renewed architectural presence to East Main Street, supporting the city’s long‑term vision for a more vibrant and inclusive downtown. This project reflects Christa Construction’s commitment to building with purpose: strengthening communities, preserving architectural heritage, and delivering spaces that serve people for generations.

When complete, the Gateway Apartments will stand as a restored landmark and a testament to what thoughtful redevelopment can achieve.
